A Peaceful Sanctuary
Providing a space for meditation and contemplation since 1973
Nechung Dorje Drayang Ling “Small Immutable Island of Melodious Sound” is a Buddhist temple and retreat located on 25 acres in Wood Valley, the Ka’u District of the Island of Hawai’i.
Established in 1973 by the Venerable Nechung Rinpoche (Thupten Konchok), Nechung Dorje Drayang Ling is a retreat and meditation center for the dissemination of the Buddhist teachings, and is open for all people seeking peace. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has stayed and taught here. Visiting Tibetan lamas of all lineages have given teachings open to the public. Teachers of all denomination have led programs on a wide variety of subjects and practices, including Zen, Vipassana, Permaculture, and Lomi Lomi Massage, among others.
Our Mission
Throughout the years, consistent efforts have been made to renovate these historic structures; and to landscape the grounds into the beautiful park it is today. Towering eucalyptus, palms, and bamboo encircle the brightly painted temple and its enclave of buildings. The vivid colors of tropical flowers punctuate the rich green foliage, and often, the scent of wild jasmine and ginger blossoms permeates the entire space. There is an extraordinary peaceful ambience here – an intangible feeling of serenity and refuge from the ordinary world.

Welcome
Nechung Monastery invites and welcomes every person seeking refuge in the ancient teachings of wisdom and compassion to practice.
